Volunteer Opportunity
Girls, Inc. of NYC and Weil, Gotshal & Manges (NYC)
Weil has
partnered with the Girls, Inc. of NYC as part of its Pay It Forward program, to
put together a one-day program for Girls, Inc. students designed to get them
excited about career paths in STEM (Science Technology Engineering Math)
fields.
The program will take place on Wednesday, October 16th from 3-5 pm at
Weil's New York office. The firm needs your help in soliciting 6-8
volunteers from among your colleagues, clients, and friends in STEM who may be
interested in this opportunity to mentor young girls.
Girls Inc. is interested particularly in women and women of color and diverse
backgrounds, who can help demonstrate to the girls that people who look like
them and come from homes like theirs can succeed in STEM, in a variety of
careers (including perhaps an example or two from the legal or business side of
a STEM employer).

FREE CLE Asylum Training - Human Rights First (New York, NY)
On Wednesday, October 16, 2013, Human Rights First will sponsor a training seminar for attorneys interested in becoming volunteers with our asylum legal representation program, and others interested in learning more about asylum law. Since 1978, Human Rights First has worked to protect and promote fundamental human rights around the world. Human Rights First's Refugee Protection Program assists indigent refugees from all backgrounds who have fled persecution on the basis of their race, religion, nationality, membership in a particular social group, or political opinion, and who are seeking asylum in the United States. Many of these asylum seekers are in urgent need of legal representation to prepare their cases for adjudication by judges at the Immigration Court. Others need representation before the Asylum Office.
The seminar will take place at the law firm of Davis Polk & Wardwell LLP, located at 450 Lexington Avenue, New York, NY. The training will begin promptly at 6:00 p.m. and will run until 8:30 p.m., with registration from 5:30 p.m. to 5:55 p.m. An immigration judge, an asylum officer, an expert on working with survivors of torture, and an attorney from Human Rights First, will speak on techniques for representing asylum applicants and recent developments in asylum law.
CLE credit will be available for participants of this training. The training is free of charge, and no prior experience in immigration law is necessary. Participants should RSVP to Frederique Drouin at DrouinF@humanrightsfirst.org by EOB on Monday, October 14, 2013.
Women in the News: Janet Yellen
Though
neither a lawyer nor an alumna, Janet Yellen is certainly making headlines as a
female leader in the professional arena today. Currently the Vice
Chairperson of the Federal Reserve System, Yellen will be appointed the Fed
chair tomorrow. With this appointment, she's been said to be "cracking
one of the highest glass ceilings" as she becomes the first woman to head the
nation's central bank in its 100 year history.

New Alumna Hire: Rachel McQuaid L'11
Last, but certainly not least: I am very pleased to announce that as of Monday, our Alumni Relations team has been enriched with the addition of fellow alumna Rachel McQuaid L'11, our new Associate Director of Alumni Relations. A 2006 graduate of Princeton University and a 2011 graduate of Penn Law, Rachel was most recently practicing as a litigation associate in Winston & Strawn's NYC office. I am delighted to have her on our team, and please join me in welcoming her!
