The ELC is a truly wonderful experience to do valuable work in a supportive and dynamic setting.  ELC supervision is incredible.  While ELC challenges students with the responsibility to represent clients in complicated legal and business matters, the incredible supervision and training enabled us to handle them confidently and professionally. I was also grateful for the opportunity to learn from amazing mentors and other students, who not only taught me the fundamentals of corporate law, but introduced me to client-centered lawyering and a much more comprehensive view of how the practice of law should be.

In the ELC I learned to trust my ability to quickly get up to speed on an unfamiliar area of law in order to provide targeted legal advice. There is a natural tendency to be nervous or cautious when a client asks you to handle something that you’ve never done before, but through the ELC I came to realize that this is one of the most interesting and satisfying things about being a lawyer.   I continue to apply these skills at MoFo, and I am more confident in my ability to help my clients as a result of my time in the ELC.

Ultimately, my time in the ELC was the most valuable academic experience during law school. ELC did a terrific job of seamlessly integrating classroom lessons with practical experiences with real clients. It also succeeded in providing me with the skills I needed to jumpstart my career as a lawyer. In addition to learning practical lawyering skills, my experience in the ELC taught me how to effectively manage and engage with clients. These skills proved invaluable when I later worked at Kirkland & Ellis advising clients in the chapter 11 restructuring process. In fact, in my first couple weeks at Kirkland, I was directly speaking with general counsels about issues in our cases.

Working with the ELC was among the most memorable experiences I had in law school. While I learned a great deal in the classroom setting at Penn, there was nothing that prepared me better for the working world than ELC. The ELC allowed me to interact with my classmates and instructors as colleagues, communicate effectively with clients and develop strategies to help our clients resolve their legal issues. My teammates and I gained practical experience interviewing and presenting to our clients, and learning to distill their requests into action items. These experiences prepared me well for my law firm job, where I regularly work with teams of lawyers to help our clients resolve complex corporate issues. In addition, the quality of the instruction I received through ELC was outstanding. The instructors strike the perfect balance, providing guidance and advice while also encouraging independent thinking and creative problem-solving. These skills are essential to success in any field, and ELC students will be well-positioned to succeed in their chosen careers.

I took ELC during my 3L year because I was looking for a way to supplement my in-class learning with hands-on experience and client contact. I wondered how working with start-ups and community organizations would translate into dealing with banks and multi-national corporations. As soon as I began working at a firm, I realized the basics of client communication and case management are universal and essential to any successful law practice. The skills I took away from ELC (both those honed during my experience and those learned for the first time) greatly eased my transition from student to lawyer. It’s one thing to be late turning in outlines to your study group, but entirely another when you are dealing with others’ lives, careers and passions. The clinic takes on clients who can benefit from our help, but also those whose needs can offer an excellent educational experience to students. The people I met were so passionate about their work, so grateful for real legal assistance that it was easy to get behind them and put in work. I believe the law school experience would not be complete without real-life, out-of-the-classroom learning. For students that are looking to engage in corporate or finance work after graduation, the experience offered by ELC is unparalleled.

Entrepreneurship Legal Clinic: One semester course offered both Fall and Spring semesters

7 credits (may drop one credit in exchange for satisfying 35 hours of student’s pro bono requirement).

Open to JD 3L students and 1st and 2nd semester 2L students.

LLM students may enroll for the spring semester, but should not register during Advance Registration as an interview with Clinic faculty is required. Consult these Registration instructions.
