Thursday, March 1, 201812:00 PM The Case for Brendan Dassey: Teaching Innovation Through Clinical EducationSteven Drizin and Laura Nirider will present the story of their client, Brendan Dassey, a Wisconsin sixteen-year-old who falsely confessed in 2005 to rape and murder – and whose ensuing wrongful conviction was featured in the hit Netflix Global docuseries Making a Murderer. Brendan’s case, and the cases of their other clients, exemplify twin problems: the practical problem of false and involuntary confessions from juveniles, and the problematic gaps in constitutional and evidentiary doctrine and practice that have allowed false confessions to occur unredressed. These twin problems serve as the foci of Drizin and Nirider’s practice and pedagogy at Northwestern Pritzker School of Law’s Center on Wrongful Convictions of Youth.Faculty Lounge
