What we do
The University of Pennsylvania Carey Law School’s Future of the Profession Initiative recognizes a leading law school’s role in designing forward-looking lawyer formation and leading essential interdisciplinary conversations that respond to the fundamental changes that are transforming the legal profession. FPI will teach the skills and knowledge most relevant for modern legal professionals, lead broad conversations about innovative opportunities that abound in the dynamic legal profession, and transform the way legal services connect clients with more responsive systems.
Lawyers of the future will collaborate across disciplines to develop new models for legal service delivery. As legal work becomes more disaggregated and lawyer mobility increases, legal professionals will be more responsible for leading themselves through this time of great change. FPI develops new ways for law students and graduates to advance their professional formation to prepare for tomorrow’s challenges.
As technology and globalization accelerate and legal career opportunities evolve, the Future of the Profession Initiative will lead profession-wide and interdisciplinary conversations about the implications of these changes and forecasts for future educational and professional trends. Through its thought leadership, FPI will serve as a hub for the most important conversations facing the legal profession.
Studies estimate that between 80-90% of legal services in the United States go unmet. FPI will serve as a destination for creative thinkers who will design and foster new and scalable ways to connect individuals and small businesses with legal services.
