Staff Spotlight: Genevieve Tung

January 22, 2021

With more of us working and learning from home and more patrons engaging with the library through virtual services and online resources, we are starting a monthly Biddle staff spotlight series to get to know the people behind the library.

The Essential Questions

What is your role and how long have you been working at Biddle?

I am the Associate Director for Educational Programs at Biddle. I joined the Penn Law staff a year ago, in January 2020, so I’ve only worked on-site for about 9 weeks!

What had helped you adjust to working from home?

I really miss working with my colleagues and the students in the building, and it’s tough working at home while my daughter is also here doing Zoom school! But we both benefit from instilling as much routine as possible, and I appreciate having more time together that isn’t spent commuting. Also, I can make delicious coffee whenever I want.

What book/s are you reading right now?

I’m working on two. My current fiction read is Charles Yu’s Interior Chinatown, which won the 2020 National Book Award. My non-fiction read is the second volume of Stephen Kotkin’s incredible biography of Joseph Stalin. They’re both great!

Lightning Round

Cats or dogs? I have two cats, who would want me to take their side.
Fiction or non-fiction? Non-fiction in the daytime, fiction for after-hours.
Comedy or horror? Horror.
Sweet or Savory? Savory.
Coffee or tea? Coffee.

Wildcard Qs

If you could have any super power, what would it be and why?
I would love to be omnilingual!

Where did you work before your time at Biddle?
I started my career practicing intellectual property law with a large firm in NYC. After I went back to grad school to become a law librarian, I worked at Rutgers Law in Camden, New Jersey, for about seven years.

What is the last television series you binged?
This month I’ve been watching the latest season of Star Trek: Discovery and the new adaptation of The Stand by Stephen King.

What is your favorite reference question or most memorable library experience?
I love it when I get to help a student who is working on an impactful project. It’s so exciting when you hear about their victory in court, or read the finished version of their law review note, and can see how their research has paid off.

What are your passions outside of work?
I practice Muay Thai at a cool gym here in West Philadelphia, which is a lot of fun! I also do a lot of knitting.
