New Era Discoveries

At Penn Law, 11 academic centers and institutes promote research to examine complex legal issues and problems. Recent examples include rapidly changing technology laws (at the Center for Technology, Innovation & Competition); the quantitative impact of regulation on jobs and the economy (at the Penn program on Regulation); and criminal justice reform (at the Quattrone Center for the Fair Administration of Justice).

These centers and their associated faculty and fellows conduct research leading to new insights in the law and connected fields, including: Law and Technology; Law and Business; Law and Criminal Justice Reform, and; Law and Health.

Teddi Josephson L’19, MCIT’19: One of the great things about this MCIT program is you don’t have to have a technology background to do it and so the first year at engineering was really where I learned how computers work and I learned some programming, which was fantastic. Now I’m at a place in my second year of taking classes at the Engineering School where I’m comfortable enough that I can take classes where it’s not about learning how to program. It’s about learning what I can do with programming, so I’m in a class now where they assign a problem and you and a group work to figure out a solution to that problem by writing code in Java and then you run a simulation and you see who’s solution is most effective.

It’s been exciting to go from someone who thought that computers just were short of magic on the inside to someone who understands how a transistor works and binary and machine code all the way up through C and C++ and Java.

My engineering work actually isn’t informed by my legal work as much as my legal work has been informed by my engineering work because so much of what we learn in engineering classes is about thinking logically and thinking algorithmically, so whether it’s understanding what a statute is saying understanding or how a judicial opinion hangs together, if you can think logically and algorithmically about how all of the pieces fit then you can understand any problem that’s placed in front of you.
