Sherrod Smith L’21

Sherrod is interested in legal and policy issues pertaining to the administration of justice and building new avenues of economic opportunity. He is originally from Milwaukee, WI and most recently worked for the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law in Washington, D.C. While at the Lawyers’ Committee, Sherrod worked with community leaders, former prosecutors from the Department of Justice (DOJ), and the Matthew Shepard Foundation to host hate crime response trainings for local prosecutors and law enforcement officers in different states throughout the country. Sherrod also helped organize the Lawyers’ Committee’s Enhancing the Response to Hate Crimes Advisory Committee initiative with other national civil rights organizations, the John Jay College of Criminal Justice, and the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP).

Prior to the Lawyers’ Committee, Sherrod spent over five years serving as a presidential appointee in the Obama administration at the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS).  At DHS, he served in Secretary Jeh Johnson’s office as the Deputy White House Liaison and in several roles focused on immigration and anti-human trafficking related issues.

Sherrod earned a B.A. in Economics from Boston University, where he was also a member of the BU Men’s Basketball team.
