Michael Stephenson L’22

Michael is originally from Kaysville, UT and graduated cum laude from Brigham Young University (BYU) with a B.S. in Sociology. He was the historian for Understanding Sexuality, Gender, and Allyship – an off-campus organization for LBGTQ+ students at BYU. He managed a digital historical archive on LGBTQ+ and Latter-day Saints history and researched the story of queerphobia, crime, and social control. He also interned with the Provo Guardian ad Litem office, where he saw the interaction between the carceral system and child welfare.

At Penn Law, he is serving as a representative on the Prison Project Committee of the National Lawyers Guild, and also does pro bono work with the criminal record expungement project. He seeks to focus his legal career on representing people harmed by the carceral state. In his free time, Michael enjoys listening to bluegrass music, birdwatching, and pickling vegetables.
