Faculty Committees

At least one student is entitled to serve on every standing faculty committee, with the exception of the Committee on Academic Freedom and the Committee on Academic Standing. The faculty members of each committee, in consultation with the Council of Student Representatives, may provide for additional student representation. The extent of student representation on ad hoc committees shall be determined by discussion between the Dean and the Council of Student Representatives at the time of creation of the committee.

Working Relationship

The exact working relationship within each committee shall be agreed upon by its members provided that such arrangements shall not be inconsistent with any part of this statement. Subject to the limitations of Section 4, students who are entitled to serve on a faculty committee are entitled to:

a) Attend all meetings;

b) Present proposals;

c) Participate in discussion of all proposals and matters brought before the committee;

d) Participate in faculty business meetings as provided in paragraphs (b) and (c).

Student Report in Lieu of Committee Report

If a committee does not report on a matter within its charge, any student member may, unless opposed by a majority of other student members, after notice to the committee and reasonable time given for a committee report, present a report to the faculty, whereupon the student and the other student members who join or oppose the reports are entitled to participate at the faculty meeting in the same manner and to the same extent as provided in the case of a committee report under paragraphs (b) and (c) of the section under Working Relationship.

Three students serve on the Admissions Committee as proposed in the report of the Ad Hoc Committee on Admission Practices (Nov. 29, 1978); adopted by the faculty on Dec. 11, 1978. Three students serve on the Appointments Committee. At its May 6, 1985 Faculty Meeting, the Faculty voted to accept a Council of Student Representatives’ proposal that a third student be permitted to serve on the Appointments Committee and that the student be a minority student chosen by the Council of Student Representatives in consultation with minority student organizations at the Law School through such selection processes as it may adopt from time to time in such consultation.
