Madison Gray L’21

Madison (she/her) intends to practice law in solidarity with organized communities and movements resisting economic and social injustice. Specifically, she is interested in confronting housing injustice and challenging the power debt has over working class people.

Maddi was raised in the Philadelphia area and graduated summa cum laude from Temple University, where she studied political science and global studies. While attending Temple University, she participated in an experiential learning opportunity at the U.S.-Mexico Border and in a maximum-security prison, both of which provided a glimpse of the immensely violent capacity of the U.S. legal system. As a Legislative Fellow in the Pennsylvania House of Representatives and an intern at the Public Interest Law Center of Philadelphia, Madison witnessed the power that legal practitioners possess to address this violence.

At Penn Law, Maddi is the Managing Director of the Penn Housing Rights Project and the Research Editor of the Journal of Law and Social Change. She has worked to save the homes of low-income Philadelphians as an intern in the Consumer Housing Unit of Philadelphia Legal Assistance, to help low-income Philadelphians access public benefits as an extern at Community Legal Services, to defend asylum seekers from deportation as a student in the Transnational Legal Clinic, and to challenge debtors prisons as a summer law clerk at Public Justice. She has also had the opportunity to work with Professor Dorothy Roberts as a Research Assistant. She is currently enrolled in the Civil Practice Clinic. Following her post-graduate clerkship, Maddi intends to return to Philly and work alongside communities in the city fighting for justice.
