Dissertation

Her dissertation examined the theoretical background and justifications for the bioethical principle of democratic deliberation and applies it to the ongoing bioethical issue of biobanking. The origin of her dissertation takes inspiration from the Presidential Commission for the Study of Bioethical Issues’ latest reports, which cite democratic deliberation as an ethical principle for analyzing emerging technologies. Democratic deliberation, although not one of the four generally accepted bioethical principles, has served a both instrumentally and normatively relevant role in the current principle-based framework. Her dissertation also presents, in depth, biobanking as an example to support the argument of adding this emerging principle.

Bio

Chao-Tien is a 2010 graduate of the Penn Law LLM program and 2014 graduate of the SJD program. Before coming to Penn Law, she was a PhD student in National Taiwan University, where she also earned a Master of Laws and a Bachelor of Laws. She has several years of experience working as an associate or apprentice attorney for top firms in Taiwan and passed the New York Bar in 2010. At Penn Law she served as Symposium Editor of East Asia Law Review (2011-12) and International Editor of Journal of International Law (2009-10). She is also an active committee member of the North American Taiwan Studies Association (2011-), whose annual conference is one of the most important forums of both Taiwan and Asian Studies in North America.
